With the elimination of steam as the prime motive power source in East Anglia and elsewhere, the deployment of redundant B1s for carriage heating was an enforced interim measure until purpose-built oil-fired boiler vans became available.
This view shows the Steam Breakdown Crane at Ipswich Diesel Depot in 1966. Attached to it is the then-brand new boiler van that led to the final redundancy of No.16
