The Ex-LNER Class B1 4-6-0 Departmental Locomotives
INCLUDING OPERATING LOCATIONS & SERVICING FACILITIES
Allocated to Ipswich MPD in October 1963as BR No.61252 and transferred to Departmental Stock on December 7th, 1963. By February 1964 it had been renumbered and used at Ipswich Station. As well as the regular carriage heating the locomotive was also employed on additional, unauthorized, work. After the loco had been serviced in the morning it moved over to the adjacent Wagon Works and was used for light shunting and steam testing repaired carriages. It was also unofficially utilized on some yard pilot duties and even called out in 1963 to rescue a couple of diesel locomotives - D8221 was hauling D5046 north from the Repair Shop when the driver inadvertently opened the controller instead of applying the brakes and the locos overran the tracks at Croft Street. D8221 ended up in the street with the Class 24 teetering on the brink! As No.22 was the heaviest locomotive available it was seconded to haul them back to the shed. The locomotive was withdrawn in May 1964 and stored at the MPD until sold to A King & Sons Ltd of Norwich for scrap in 1965
