Allocated to New England MPD and used at Hornsey as BR No.61105 until transferred to Departmental Stock on January 9th, 1965. The locomotive was re-allocated to Parkeston MPD for use at Parkeston Quay Station and was observed in transit at Stratford MPD on March 5th, 1965.
It arrived at Parkeston MPD during the night and was put to work the following evening. For the first week it moved under its own steam to the location at the “In Yard” where it was deployed to heat the Boat Trains. This practice ceased within a fortnight or so as one of the drivers was particularly adept at maximizing the amount of steam and smoke emissions and a directive to de-activate the B1 was quickly sent from the management! The main connecting rods and regulator were removed and it was about this time that the Departmental Number was applied - Cliff “Sooty” Syson, a former tube cleaner, was allotted the task and the new legend was painted on utilizing a set of stencils borrowed from Parkeston Quay where they were used for packing case marking. Subsequently the locomotive was moved between the depot and heating location by means of a Class 08 0-6-0 Diesel Shunter as required. Unlike the practice at other locations Boat Train stock was heated throughout the year and the B1 was employed continuously. In another arrangement unique to this site, steam was transmitted via a flanged coupling underneath the locomotive’s footplate and fed via underground pipes to the Boat Train Stock.
The locomotive was withdrawn in May 1966, sold for scrap to A King & Sons Ltd of Norwich and towed to Norwich Thorpe MPD for disposal on July 22nd, 1966

No.27, not long after arrival at Parkeston MPD on March 27th, 1965. By this time it had received its Departmental Number and was still able to move from depot to carriage heating point under its own steam.                                                   Dave Goodyear
