The works were opened in 1847 by the SE&CR and eventually expanded to the point where the Locomotive and Carriage & Wagon building activities were carried out on two separate sites within the works complex
Locomotive Works; Steam loco repairs ceased on June 30th, 1962 and by 1964 it had been converted into a wagon works. It was closed in June 1984, having for the previous two years just been involved in a wagon scrapping programme. The site, including most of the remaining buildings, remained undeveloped for many years.
Carriage & Wagon Works; Following the conversion of the Locomotive Works in 1964 it was gradually run down as replacement facilities became available at the new site. It was finally dispensed with by BR in 1970 and part of the site was briefly utilized to produce concrete segments for the Channel Tunnel. By 2006 it was occupied by a McArthur Glen Retail Outlet
Facilities; The locomotives stabled in the Locomotive Works at the site of the former Ashford SER shed at TR01744177. The facilities included engine pits and a coal stage.
